Treating Them Like Family
Long stretches of grey, wet weather do more than dampen your own mood. For indoor cats, overcast days can quietly take a toll on their physical comfort and emotional wellbeing in ways that are easy to overlook. Cats are sensitive creatures, finely attuned to the rhythms of light, temperature and atmosphere. When the sky stays heavy and the rain keeps falling, something shifts for them, and not always in ways that are obvious at first glance.
You might notice your cat sleeping more than usual, seeming a little flat, or moving around the house with less enthusiasm than they normally would. These are not dramatic signs, and it can be tempting to brush them off as your cat simply being a cat. But there is often something more nuanced happening beneath the surface, and understanding it can help you offer your companion the support they genuinely need.
Cats thrive on natural light. It helps regulate their circadian rhythms, supports healthy sleep-wake cycles, and plays a quiet but important role in their overall mood. When natural light is reduced for days or even weeks at a time, as is common during winter or prolonged wet spells in many parts of Australia, cats can experience a subtle but real shift in their emotional state. Researchers who study feline behaviour describe this as a kind of low-grade restlessness or mild stress, not distress in an acute sense, but a background unease that can build steadily when the environment stays grey and dull for too long.

Patience, Comfort and Care
Physically, cool and damp weather also affects cats in ways that are easy to miss. Older cats in particular, and cats with any history of joint sensitivity, may experience increased stiffness during cold, wet periods. Even younger cats can carry muscular tension they would not normally hold during warmer, sunnier months. Reduced activity compounds this. When a cat is less inclined to move, stretch, play or explore, the body becomes stiffer and more uncomfortable, which in turn makes the cat even less inclined to move. It is a quiet cycle that can settle in gradually over the course of a wet season.
Restlessness is another common response. Some cats become more vocal during grey weather, pacing between rooms or seeking attention in unusual ways. Others withdraw, finding a warm corner and staying there for longer than is healthy. Neither response is cause for alarm on its own, but both are worth noticing. Your cat is communicating something, and the message is usually that they need more comfort, stimulation and connection than the dull weather is naturally providing.
This is where thoughtful, hands-on care becomes genuinely valuable. Animal massage, when performed by someone trained in feline anatomy and behaviour, offers cats something that goes well beyond physical relaxation. A skilled massage visit can help ease muscular tension, encourage gentle circulation, and support the kind of calm, settled state that grey weather often works against. For a cat that has been stiff, restless or quietly stressed, even a single session can create a meaningful shift in how they feel and how they carry themselves in the days that follow.
The environment in which that care is delivered matters enormously, and this is one of the most important things to understand about cats specifically. Unlike dogs, who are often adaptable to new environments and social situations, cats are deeply territorial. Their home is their sanctuary. The familiar smells, textures, sounds and sightlines of their own space are not just comforting, they are central to their sense of safety. Removing a cat from that environment, even briefly, introduces a layer of stress that can undermine the very benefits you are trying to provide.
Standards You Can Rely On
An in-home visit sidesteps that problem entirely. When a practitioner comes to your cat rather than the other way around, the cat remains in the place where they feel most secure. There is no carrier, no car journey, no unfamiliar waiting room, and no lingering anxiety from the travel experience itself. The cat can choose to engage at their own pace, in their own space, surrounded by their own things. This distinction is not a small one. It is the difference between a session that genuinely helps and one that simply adds to the day's sensory load.
One-on-one attention in a calm home setting also allows the practitioner to read the cat carefully, adjusting pressure, pace and technique in real time based on how the animal responds. Every cat is different. What one cat finds deeply settling, another may need introduced gradually. A personalised, unhurried approach respects that individuality in a way that a busy or clinical environment simply cannot replicate. For cats managing the physical and emotional weight of a long wet season, that quality of attention is precisely what is needed.
What To Do Next
If your cat has seemed stiff, low in energy, restless or just a little flat during this stretch of grey weather, an in-home animal massage visit is worth considering sooner rather than later. The days are not getting sunnier just yet, and your cat will feel the difference that thoughtful, hands-on care can make.
At Your Bark and Claw offers mobile animal massage and complementary therapy visits for cats in their own home environment. There is no need for your cat to travel anywhere or face any disruption. The care comes to them, on their terms, in the space where they feel safest.
