Treating Them Like Family

Cats are not dogs. They do not adapt easily to new environments, new smells, or new people walking through the door with a smile and a handful of treats expecting immediate affection. Most cats will tell you, in very clear terms, that your enthusiasm is not welcome. What a cat needs when its owner is away is not novelty. It is continuity. The same windows. The same patch of afternoon sun. The same smells on the cushions, the same sounds filtering in from the street. Uprooting a cat from all of that and depositing it somewhere unfamiliar does not just cause inconvenience - it causes genuine stress, and that stress shows up in behaviour, appetite and health. Kirsten's in-home cat sitting service exists because cats are better off at home, and because the person coming through the door should be someone the cat comes to know, not a verified stranger from an app who is booked differently every time.

The visits themselves are not a quick check-in and a top-up of biscuits. Kirsten does proper morning and evening visits, and each one includes feeding, play and enrichment. Not as an optional extra. As the standard. Cats are crepuscular by nature, most active around dawn and dusk, and timing visits to match that rhythm matters. It is also the detail that separates a genuine cat person from someone who is simply available. The litter box is kept clean at every visit, because a dirty tray is one of the first things a cat registers and objects to, often loudly and creatively. Brushing is on the table for cats who enjoy it. Treats, toys, time on the floor - whatever the individual cat is up for. The one thing that does not happen is forcing interaction. Some cats want to be in your lap within thirty seconds. Others will spend three visits watching from the top of the bookshelf before they decide you are acceptable. Both responses are completely reasonable, and Kirsten works on the cat's terms, not hers.

Patience, Comfort and Care

This matters most when the cat in question is nervous or shy. It is the worry that sits quietly at the back of every owner's mind when they book someone new: my cat is not going to cope. Kirsten's own clients have described cats with extreme nerves around people who eventually started greeting her at the door. That does not happen because of a technique or a trick. It happens because every animal has its own way of communicating, and learning to read that, and respond to it consistently, is what builds real trust. A cat that comes to associate a particular person with calm, with food, with play and with absolutely no pressure to perform is a cat that starts to relax. It takes a little time and a lot of patience, and it is exactly the kind of thing that gets skipped when the person visiting is different every time.

Kirsten covers Newcastle, Newcastle East, Newcastle West, Charlestown, Maitland, East Maitland, Mayfield, Cardiff and Warners Bay, subject to schedule. She drives an electric vehicle, which means drive time and range are not the constraint they can be for other local sitters. The right person for your cat should not be decided by geography, and with an EV it largely is not. Spring is already moving fast toward summer, and the December school holiday period books out earlier than most people expect. If you are planning travel over Christmas or New Year, now is the right time to get in touch rather than the week before. Reaching out early means there is time to do a proper meet and greet, so your cat has already clocked Kirsten's presence before you leave. Book online through the At Your Bark and Claw website, and give your cat the one thing it actually wants while you are away: home.

Frequently asked questions

If you have questions about the right pet care options, we can helpfully provide the answers.

  • What areas do you cover?

When it comes to one on one pet care we cover Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and Maitland region care, depending on availability. If you are looking more towards distance reiki sessions for your pet, then please get in touch no matter where you are in Australia.

  • What kinds of pets do you care for?

We are able to assist with cats, dogs and pocket pets. We're unfortunately not covered to look after reptiles or exotic animals with our current qualifications.

  • What do you offer?

We offer dog walking, enrichment, daily animal feedings and check ins, and remote reiki. We unfortunately are unable to accommodate overnight stays or offer a pet creche. Pet day care is only offered in your home environment.

  • What makes you different to other providers?

We operate under our own business name, with animal care certifications and public liability insurance. We're not a "Uber for animal care" and our attention to detail for your pets, and your home is second-to-none.

  • Why are your rates so high?

At Your Bark and Claw are your only fully insured provider that is dedicated to your animal family, we don't combine bookings with dog walks and for holiday cares we dedicate additional hours ensuring your house is as pristine as possible upon your return. We also provide vet-quality sterilised enrichment toys based on your pets current playstyle and approved treats. To cover such an extensive service requires us to charge a higher rate than others, but you get exemplary service where nothing is missed.
